World Tourism Day 2019

DP World Limassol: Sustainable cruise

tourism key driver for economic growth

Limassol, Cyprus, 27 September 2019: Tourism is one of the key drivers of the Cypriot economy and today on World Tourism Day, DP World Limassol, the operator of the New Cruise Terminal at Limassol port, reaffirms its commitment to enhance the country’s cruise industry and overall tourism sector.

Each year World Tourism Day is commemorated on 27 September, to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value and is led by the United Nations’ World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). This year’s theme of “Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all”, is aligned with DP World Limassol’s vision to establish Limassol port as a regional cruise hub by promoting sustainable tourism that will create job opportunities and multiple benefits for the local economy.

Tourism is a major source of employment, providing a multitude of opportunities, not only for the people who are employed at the port but also for those who are involved in a number of other related industries.

DP World Limassol General Manager, Charles Meaby, commented “Cruise tourism is a fast-growing industry that has the potential to create numerous job positions and increase employment prospects in the tourism sector. Limassol has great potential to become a major cruise hub in the Mediterranean Sea and we are here to help make it happen”.

Mr. Meaby continued “In 2019 we expect over 90 calls and that number has doubled since last year while the upward trend is expected to continue into 2020”. Nevertheless, this is a collective effort that requires the collaborative support of all stakeholders and partners. We aim to secure the long-term future of the port, making it an engine of growth for the economy of Cyprus, creating new jobs and providing better and improved services to the local and the wider Cypriot business community”.
